BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's Basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season, as the Lightning fell to the College of Mt. St. Vincent, 77-59, on Monday night in the APEX. Lehman now falls to 3-2 overall, while CMSV remains unblemished at 2-0.
Lehman jumped out to a strong start, scoring the first seven points of the game.
Junior Shalaya Nieves (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) took a feed from sophomore Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) and scored the first points of the game with a layup, en route to a 7-0 lead, just two minutes into the game. Minutes later, Nieves would make the first of a pair of free throws, as Lehman led 12-7, with 13:46 to go in the first half. From there, the Dolphins went on an 11-0 run to take an 18-12 lead, before freshman Genesis Liberato (Santo Domingo, D.R./Liceo Ramon Matias Mella) hit a free throw to cut the run. However, CMSV scored the next six points to seize control.
With the lead as high as 14 points, the Lightning made a run of their own, as freshman Amely Del Rosario (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) scored five of the next seven points, as the Lightning cut the lead to seven, 29-22. But the Dolphins came right back, extending the lead to as many as 16 points, before settling on a 39-27 halftime lead.
Lehman's momentum carried over in the beginning of the second half, as the home team went on a 6-1 run to pull within seven points, with 16:00 left in regulation.
However, the Lightning's offensive attack faded away as CMSV scored the next six points to increase the lead to 46-33. The Lightning kept missing shots and turning the ball over while the opposition kept hitting timely baskets to prevent Lehman from getting back in the game.
For the evening, Lehman committed 28 turnovers and only shot 25% from the field, sealing their fate.
Del Rosario led the Lightning with 16 points, nine steals, three blocks, and grabbed six boards. Sophomore Amani Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y./Alexander Hamilton) produced a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Liberato produced 11 points while Navarro tallied ten points. Nieves and Madrigal each collected 12 rebounds.
The Lightning will be back in the APEX on Wednesday, December 4, for a key conference doubleheader with the men against CUNYAC foe, Hunter College. The women are scheduled to tip off at 5:00 p.m.
