BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College women's soccer team defeated NYU-Polytech, 3-2, on Wednesday night. Lehman has now beaten the Blue jays in back-to-back games.
Sophomore midfielder Juliana Generoso led the Lightning with two goals and an assist. Her classmate Samantha Dias pitched in with a goal and an assist.
Lehman (4-1) struck early as Generoso (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had a rebound from a goalie and nailed it into the net to put the Lightning up, 1-0, just nine minutes into the first half. NYU-Poly (1-2) would even up the score about 13 minutes later, as Sabrina Fletcher recovered the ball after a scramble in front and tied the game.
In the second half, the Lightning would regain the lead, thanks to a sneaky play, as Generoso lined up for a free kick. She tipped the ball right to Dias (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./ Connetquot), who ripped the ball in the net from 15 yards out to put Lehman up, 2-1, at the 41:16 mark of the second half.
Generoso would continue the assault as she took a feed from Dias and booted it past NYU-Poly goalkeeper Molly Bartz to extend the home-team's lead to 3-1, with just 31:45 left to play.
NYU-Poly would not go down quietly, as the team scored with just 14:12 left in regulation to pull the visitors within one. Lehman would hold off the opposition's last rush in the closing minutes to hang on and win the game. Sophomore Melanie Varillas (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) made four saves for the Lightning to earn the win.
On the season, Generoso leads the team in scoring with eight goals and three assists, for 19 points. She has had a hand in eleven of Lehman's 14 goals.
The two teams had faced each other just three days ago, in the Championship Game of the Cedar Crest College Tournament. Lehman won that game, 1-0.
The Lightning will next face local rival Mt. St. Vincent on Saturday, September 14, at 7:30 p.m., Tibbetts Brook Park, in Yonkers.
After that, the Blue and Gold return home on Monday, September 16th, as part of a soccer doubleheader on the South Field. Both the women and men will face Purchase College, with the women starting at 4:30 p.m. The men will follow around 7:00 p.m.
