Women's Basketball Storms Back to Win at Hunter

Box Score

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team came from behind, to earn a CUNY Athletic Conference victory over host Hunter College, 74-72, on Friday evening. The Lightning trailed by as many as 12 in the first half, but rallied in the second to earn their fifth conference victory of the season.

Junior forward Amani Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y./Alexander Hamilton) led the way for the Lightning (11-5, 5-3 CUNYAC) with a team-high 20 points. Classmate Karrin Walker (New York, N.Y./Richard R. Green) was able to spark Lehman's rally by scoring all 17 of her points in the second half.

With Lehman trailing by eight, in the early stages of the second stanza, Walker successfully converted a layup, while being fouled. She completed the three-point play, by hitting a free throw, to cut Hunter's (5-11, 3-5 CUNYAC) lead to 37-32, with just over 17:00 remaining in regulation. After Lehman cut the deficit to three, Walker remained aggressive by attacking the paint and drawing a foul, while laying the ball up and in. She tallied the free throw to complete her second three-point play of the second half, to tie the game at 37, with 15:59 to go.

After Hunter went back up by two, it was déjà vu for Walker as she attacked Hunter's interior defense and once again made a layup, while being fouled. She added a free throw to complete her third three-point play of the half, and give Lehman its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest, 42-41.

After Hunter regained the lead, 43-42, the Lightning would take over the game by going on an 11-0 run, in a span of 2:46, capped off by a three-pointer from Lightbourne to put Lehman up, 53-43, with 10:21 remaining.

The Lightning had an eight-point lead, with 1:05 remaining, but the Hawks had one more run in them, as they scored 11 of the game's last 16 points. However, it was not enough, as Lehman was able to hang on to win, 74-72.

Junior guard Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) scored 13 points, while classmate Linda McKeon (Yonkers, N.Y./ Moyne C.S.) added 12 points, including a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. Walker grabbed nine boards.

The Lightning will be on the road once again, for another CUNYAC contest, this time against John Jay. The game will be played on the campus of the College of Staten Island, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
