Storybook Season for the Lightning Continues

The Lehman women's soccer team has only been in existence for four seasons and the first three can be described as mediocre at best.  During their inaugural campaign in 2012 Lehman posted an 8-8 mark.  That was followed up with seasons of 7-8 and 8-9-1.  This year, the Lightning stand at 13-2 and have an undefeated record, 6-0, in the CUNYAC.

Lehman enters the CUNYAC post season tournament as the number one seed and fill face # 4 John Jay at 4:00 PM on the Brooklyn College Field Wednesday afternoon.  Fans that are unable to attend the game can follow along via live-stats.   The winner will battle the winner of the Brooklyn/ CSI contest.  The Championship contest is slated for 2:00 PM Saturday at Brooklyn College.  The champion receives an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
Tickets to the semi-finals are free however; you must registrar online for the free pass.

"We are a good team," commented second year head coach Casey Melilli.  The reigning CUNYAC Coach of the Year, Melilli also served as the teams' assistant coach during the 2013 season.  "You never know what is going to happen on the field.  Just because we beat John Jay a couple of weeks ago doesn't mean that we will do it again. We have to come out ready to play."

Two weeks ago (October 21), the Lightning blanked the Bloodhounds 5-0 in a contest that was played on Randall's Island.  Ten minutes into the contest Chelsea Harris put the Lightning on the scoreboard as she converted a cross from Daisy Narvaez in the penalty box.  Eight minutes later Juliana Generoso scored on a breakaway to double Lehman's lead.  In the 42nd minute, Lillian Barreto tallied for the Lightning to push the score to 3-0 at the half.  One minute into the second half Harris netted her second of the contest on a breakaway.  In the 70th minute Daisy Gomez rounded out the scoring when she found the back of the net.

"We need to take John Jay seriously.  Just because we beat them the first time around doesn't mean they can't extract some revenge this time," commented senior Samantha Dias.

The team has become a real offensive threat.  The Lightning rank fourth in the country in goals per game.  Freshman standout Chelsea Harris has done most of the damage.  A native of the Bronx, Harris has netted 21 of the teams 71 goals.  Juliana Generoso, a four year player for the Lightning has found the back of the net 13 times this year.  Goalkeeper Stephanie Gonzalez has a goals against average of 1.10 and has posted eight shut outs.
