Amely Del Rosario's two successful free throw attempts with four seconds left in the game propelled Lehman to a come-from behind 73-72 victory over Randolph College in the consolation game of the Mary Washington Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The pair of free throws were two of Del Rosario's game-high 26 points.
The Lightning (2-3) were up by nine at halftime, but the Wildcats (0-3) outscored the Blue and Gold, 22-13, in the third quarter to tie the game up going into the final stanza. Both teams battled tooth and nail in the fourth quarter, but it was Lehman that was able to come out on top thanks to the clutch free throws made by Del Rosario.
Lehman was in danger of losing its second game in a row, as a basket by the Wildcats gave them their first lead of the game, 70-69, with 43 seconds remaining after the Lightning led by as many as 15 points in the first half. After drawing a foul, senior forward
Amani Lightbourne hit two free throws to give Lehman a one-point advantage, at 71-70, with 26 seconds remaining.
Randolph College once again regained the lead on a layup with 15 seconds left. In the Lightning's last chance, Del Rosario was able to draw the foul while driving to the basket, with four seconds remaining. She hit the first free throw to tie the game at 72, and then hit the second to give Lehman the lead. The Lightning were able to hold the Wildcats scoreless on the final possession, as Del Rosario secured the defensive rebound to clinch Lehman's second victory of the season.
Del Rosario grabbed 10 boards along with her 26 points to earn a double-double. She also added five assists, two steals, and a block. Senior guard
Jennifer Navarro added 20 points, while Lightbourne produced 12 and senior forward
Yarmese Jones tallied 11.
The Lightning will open CUNY Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, when Lehman takes on John Jay at the Doghouse, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
