Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team earned a CUNY Athletic Conference victory by defeating CSI in straight sets on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-16, 25-19, and 25-22.
The Lightning (5-4, 2-1 CUNYAC) were led by senior outside hitter
Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), who tallied a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs. She also produced a solo block.
In the opening set, Lehman scored eight of the first 11 points highlighted by four kills from Aquino. The Dolphins (2-4, 0-3 CUNYAC) rallied to take a 12-10 lead. However, the Lightning were able to shift momentum back into their favor by going on a 12-2 run, capped off by Aquino's sixth kill of the set, to take a 22-14 lead. Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella) produced a service ace to give Lehman the opening set victory, 25-16.
In the second set, both teams went back and forth early on. With the score tied at six, Lehman scored four unanswered points, capped off by a service ace from sophomore defensive specialist
Lizette Medina (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) to give Lehman a 10-6 lead. The Lightning would not look back for the remainder of the stanza, as a kill by Aquino clinched the set to give Lehman a 2-0 advantage and put the College of Staten Island on the brink.
In the third set, Lehman got off to a strong start by jumping out to a 10-4 lead. CSI rallied to tie the frame at 14. Both teams exchanged points throughout the set, as Lehman held a narrow 23-22 lead. The Blue and Gold would scored the final two points, capped off by a kill from sophomore outside hitter
Monique Young (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman), to clinch Lehman's second conference victory of the season.
Junior opposite hitter
Salveira Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) produced eight kills and scored four aces. Sophomore outside hitter
Lindsay Pantaleon (New York, N.Y./Gorge Washington) produced seven service aces and had just as many digs. Medina recorded eight digs, while Dubois tallied 19 assists.
The lightning will battle the Bloodhounds of John Jay, in another CUNY Athletic Conference contest, on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The match will be played at the APEX Main Gym but John Jay will be the home team.
