Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team earned a hard-fought CUNY Athletic Conference victory over John Jay in five sets, at the APEX Main Gym, on Friday evening. Set scores were 25-14, 25-17, 20-25, 19-25, and 15-10. The Lightning are now 6-4 overall and 3-1 in CUNYAC play.
Lehman was led by senior outside hitter
Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), who tallied 16 kills, had just as many digs, and scored four service aces.
In the opening set, Lehman scored five unanswered points, highlighted by two service aces from junior opposite hitter
Salveira Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) to take a 15-8 lead. Later in the stanza, with Lehman at set point, Aquino scored a service ace to put the Lightning up 1-0 in the match.
In the second set, Lehman had a narrow 15-13 lead, but would pull away thanks to scoring six unanswered points, highlighted by senior setter
Imani Dubois' (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella) service ace, to put the Blue and Gold up by a score of 21-13. Lehman would close out the set, 25-17, and put the Bloodhounds (3-5, 1-3 CUNYAC) on the brink.
After dropping the third set, the Lightning fell behind 15-13 in the fourth. Lehman would respond by scoring the next four points to go up 17-15. However, the Bloodhounds would surge to a 10-2 run to win the set and even the match at two.
In the rubber set, the Lightning fell behind 4-2, but would respond by scoring the next six points, highlighted by a kill and two service aces from Aquino, to regain the lead 8-4. Lehman would not trail in the match from that point, as a kill by freshman middle blocker
Yzaira Galan (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) clinched the fifth set and the match for Lehman.
Gonzalez had nine kills with four aces, while Dubois added eight kills and 23 assists. Sophomore defensive specialist
Chaochi Lee (Elmsford, N.Y./Flushing) chipped in on defense with three block assists.
Lehman will be back in the APEX Main Gym on Tuesday, for a non-conference match with Mount Saint Mary, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
