Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – After dropping the first two sets, the Lehman College women's volleyball team won the last three to defeat host SUNY Maritime, 3-2, on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 17-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, and 15-10. The Lightning are now 1-0 to begin the season.
The Lightning were led by senior opposite hitter
Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) who produced 21 kills and 34 digs, which were both match-highs.
Lehman fell in the first two sets and were put on the brink. Aquino set the tone in the third by scoring the first two points on back-to-back kills. With the Lightning up 13-11 in the set, Aquino scored three of Lehman's next four points, all by kills, to put the Blue and Gold up 17-11. Lehman went on to win the third set, 25-22.
In the fourth stanza, a service ace by senior setter
Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella) gave Lehman a set-point opportunity. The Privateers committed an attack error to allow Lehman to even the match at two sets apiece.
In the rubber match, the Lightning scored five of the first six points, highlighted by a kill from freshman middle blocker
Yzaira Galan (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and a service ace from sophomore outside hitter
Monique Young (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman), to give Lehman an early advantage. Dubois produced back-to-back service aces to extend the Lightning's lead to 10-3. Junior opposite hitter
Salveira Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) produced three kills in the match, with her third one giving Lehman a match-point opportunity. Aquino slammed home a kill to complete the come-from-behind victory.
Dubois produced 34 assists, 14 digs, eight service aces, and four kills. Gonzalez added 14 kills of her own.
The Lightning will travel to William Paterson University for a non-conference match with the Pioneers, on Thursday, beginning at 7:00 p.m.Â
