Juliana Generoso's fourth goal of the season, 2:51 into overtime, propelled Lehman to a 5-4 victory over Purchase, on Tuesday evening on the South Field. The Lightning improve to 4-0, which is the best start in the history of the program.
"I am really proud of the team," Lightning head coach
Casey Melilli said. "They showed a lot of heart and never gave up. We earned this victory."
Lehman overcame a one-goal deficit on two separate occasions in the second half to force overtime. Generoso (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) scored two goals, including the game-winner in the extra session, to help lead the Lightning.
Lehman got off to a strong start as sophomore midfielder
Lillian Barreto (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) fed the ball to Generoso, who beat the Purchase (0-2) goalkeeper from 15-yards out for her first tally of the match, giving the Lightning a 1-0 lead in the 11
th minute. Just under eight minutes later, senior defender
Samantha Dias (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) took advantage of a free kick opportunity and launched the ball into the back of the cage to increase the Lightning's lead to two goals. The Panthers were able to narrow the deficit, 2-1, before the end of the half.
In the second stanza, Purchase scored two goals within the first 15 minutes to take a 3-2 lead. The Lightning would put the Panthers' momentum to a halt, as freshman midfielder
Daisy Gomez (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) was able to collect a rebound and bury the ball into the net to tie the game, 3-3, in the 65
th minute.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Purchase would once again take the lead, this time by a score of 4-3.
In the closing minutes of the second half, Lehman answered once again as freshman midfielder
Chelsey Harris (Bronx, N.Y./Cayon) directed a shot that went under the crossbar and into the back of the net, to tie the game at four, with just 5:55 left to play in regulation.
90 minutes was not enough to determine a winner, so extra time was needed. Just under three minutes into the first overtime period, Lehman had a corner kick opportunity. Dias kicked the ball from the corner to the front of the net. Generoso was there to pick up the rebound and shoot the ball into the net to clinch the Lightning's fourth victory in as many games this season.
Lehman outshot Purchase 20-14. Sophomore goalkeeper
Stephanie Gonzalez (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) made five saves, and earned her fourth victory of the season, in goal.
The Lightning will travel to Old Westbury on Saturday, for a non-conference matchup with the Panthers, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
