Box Score Andrew Utate Interview
New York, N.Y. –
Andrew Utate's 30-point performance helped the Lehman College men's basketball team bounced back after a tough loss at home to secure a 87-77 win over CUNYAC foe John Jay Saturday afternoon on the road.
With the victory, the Lightning (3-3) returns to the .500 mark and earns their first conference win of the 2016-17 season.
In the win, Utate posted a team-high 30 points on 11-for-18 shooting, including drilling seven three-pointers, and grabbed five rebounds.
John Brens was the team's main distributor by dishing off 17 assists along with 10 points and five steals.
Damian Bellamy netted 19 points and grabbed five boards in the win.
The Bloodhounds (0-6) were led in defeat by Essien Epps, who scored a squad-best 26 points along with five steals.
To start the first half, Lehman jumped out to a 10-0 run to start the first four minutes of the game, and led almost wire-to-wire as they took a 48-33 lead into halftime.
In the second half, John Jay would score 12 early points and would use the three-pointer to get even and then grab a 58-57 lead with 10:11 left.
But a 12-0 run the next three minutes led by seven points from Bellamy put the Lightning back ahead. They would hold off a late Bloodhounds rally in the last few minutes to secure the victory.
Lehman will next head to Brooklyn to face CUNYAC opponent Brooklyn College Tuesday night as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
