Post Game Interview with Coach Harrison, Karrin Walker and Amely Del Rosario

Brunswick, ME - In their second ever NCAA Tournament appearance, the Lehman College Lightning fell to NYU 70-63 in the opening round of the NCAAs.  Lehman finishes the season with a record of 20-8.  NYU (19-7) will play the winner of Westfield State (MA) and Bowdoin on Saturday night.  Tip-off is slated for 7:00 PM.

Karrin Walker led the Lightning with 20 points and 15 rebounds.  It was her 13 double doubles in only 17 appearances this season.  Amely Del Rosario, the CUNYAC Player of the Year and CUNYAC Tournament MVP, scored 17 points and dished out 11 assists.   Jennifer Navarro netted 12 points and Amani Lightbourne tallied 10 points.  With her first bucket of the night Jennifer Navarro moved into sixth place on the all-time CUNYAC scoring list.  After tonight, the senior has 1,735 career points and ranks second in the Lehman history books.

The Lightning jumped out to a 16-2 lead and owned a 22-8 lead after the first quarter thanks in part to 12 points by Del Rosario.  Lehman held the Violets to 4-17 from the field (24%).

Lehman was able to stretch the lead to 15 (28-13) after a Navarro lay-up with 6:30 remaining in the second quarter.  The Violets rallied and cut the lead to nine but Lehman was again was able to push the advantage back to double figures.  A three-point by NYUs Maya Wasowicz in the closing seconds of the quarter brought the lead back down to nine, 37-28.

The third quarter belonged to NYU.  Kaitlyn Reed, NYUs first team All-UAA selection scored the team's first 11 points of the third quarter to get the Violets within striking distance.  The Violets started the second half with a 16-7 run and a three-pointer by Riley Wurtz tied the game at 44 with 4:15 to play in the third.  Back to back threes by Del Rosario and Navarro answered the call.  The Lightning still owned a 54-50 lead after three quarters.

Violets started the fourth like they started the third by going on a 16-2 run.  Megan Dawe's free throws early in the period gave the Violets their first lead of the night, 57-56.  The senior All-UAA performer followed that up with three consecutive layups to give NYU a seven point advantage.  With the Violets up by eight, a traditional three point play by Yarmese Jones brought the lead down to five, 66-61 with 3:11 to play. But the Lightning were unable to get any closer.

Reed paced NYU with 22 points and 13 rebounds.  Dawes added 21.

The Violets were an at-large team selection having lost six of their last seven contests.  The NCAA selection committee elected the Violets on their strength of schedule.  NYU has the seventh hardest schedule in the country.

The Lehman Lightning season comes to an end.
