New York, N.Y. -- The Lehman College women's basketball team battled back in the second half, and emerged victorious on the road as they defeated Baruch College, 64-57, Friday night in CUNYAC play.
The Lightning move to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference, winners of three straight. They were led by
Krystal Pearson, who poured in a double-double with a team-high 26 points with 15 rebounds and three blocks.
Amely Del Rosario added 25 points, while Marika Gordon secured a game-high 17 rebounds along with six points in the win. Selima Sangare was a force on the boards also by grabbing 10 rebounds of her own.
"This was a great win for the Lightning," commented Coach Harrison. "The team battled back and showed a lot of heart in securing the victory."
Baruch falls to 5-7 overall and suffers their first loss in the CUNYAC and is 4-1. Veronica Ganzi led all scorers in defeat with 29 points to go with six rebounds and three assists in a losing effort for the Bearcats. Daniele Arias dished out a game-best six assists, while Kristen Podlovits chipped in 10 points.
Lehman controlled the rebounding game, earning a 59-49 edge in the contest. The defense held Baruch to just 29.3% (22-for-75) from the field, while the Lightning hit on 25-of-72 of their shots for 34.7%. After controlling the first part of the half with an 18-12 edge after one, the Lightning worked their way back and outscored Baruch 16-9 to take a small 28-27 lead into the half.
A defensive battle lasted nearly halfway through the third quarter, with Lehman scoring just one basket and Baruch just two as the Bearcats maintained a 31-30 advantage. Baruch would pad their lead the rest of the quarter, building it up to eight at the end of the third 46-38.
The fourth saw the Lightning jump back into it, scoring 12 of the first 16 points of the quarter to tie the game at 50. After two Del Rosario free throws put the Lightning up 52-50, the two teams would fight back and forth in the final minutes as they held onto a 54-53 edge. The Lightning, led by Pearson and Del Rosario would go on an 8-0 run in the next minute and a half to seal the game.
