Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team saw its seven-game-winning-streak come to an abrupt end on Friday courtesy of an 82-75 loss to SUNY Poly in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic from the Apex. The host school is now 7-3 after the setback.
The first 5:45 of the game saw the Wildcats jump out to a 17-2 advantage, with the only Lehman points coming from a
Mylo Mitchell layup early on. The Lighting would fight a hard fought, uphill battle the rest of the way. A 9-2 run midway through the first half pulled Lehman within 19-11. They got four points from
Jean Marcial, a three-pointer from
Andrew Utate and a bucket from
Ja-Zhyoun Laing. Lehman got within eight points a few more times in the half, but trailed at the break, 39-29.
The Wildcats pulled away in the second half, eventually pushing their lead to 14 points, at 46-32 with 17:23 left. Lehman got the deficit back into single digits on a Mitchell three-pointer with 16:26 remaining. A Laing layup halfway through the period pulled the Lightning within a single possession, at 54-51. Poly pulled away from there, getting the lead back into double digits. Lehman eventually lost 82-75.
In the game,
Luis Hernandez had a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds (including eight offensive boards).
Jean Marcial shot 7-12 and finished with 18 points.
Andrew Utate scored 15 points and collected a game-best three steals. Finally, Mitchell scored 11.
The Lehman College men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, January 3, when they face the College of Staten Island on the road at 7PM.
