Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College volleyball team dropped a home doubleheader to Old Westbury and Rutgers-Newark by identical, 3-0 scores. The sets went 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19 against the Panthers and 25-12, 25-11 and 25-6 for the Scarlet Raiders.
Lehman came out strong against Old Westbury, taking a 4-1 lead on kills from
Yzaira Galan and Francesca Acevedo and a pair of attack errors. The Panthers rebounded and tied the score at 9-9. They pulled away and took the set, 25-17.
Set two was a back-and-forth battle that saw a tie score eight different times. The final even mark came at 16-16, when Old Westbury was out of rotation. The Panthers closed out the set with a 9-1 run, as
Paulette Sepulveda recorded a kill to account for the Lehman point. The set went to Old Westbury, 25-17.
The final set was close early on for both sides. Trailing 5-4, Lehman rattled off four consecutive points to go ahead, 8-5. Sepulveda had a pair of aces in between a couple of attack errors. From there, the score would be tied eight more times, eventually landing at 19-19 thanks to a
Caitlin Vernon kill. Old Westbury scored the final six points to win 25-19.
Samantha Delgado had six digs and seven assists versus Rutgers-Newark. The opening set saw the Scarlet Knights go up 4-0, before a Lehman rally brought them to 4-3. Rutgers-Newark went on to take the set 25-12. They won set two, 25-11 and closed out the match, 25-6.
The Lehman College women's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, September 16, when they travel to Montclair, New Jersey for matches with Montclair State and Vassar. The action gets underway at 11 AM.
