Second Half Comeback Falls Short at Staten Island for Women’s Basketball

Box Score Staten Island, N.Y. –  A frenetic, second half comeback for the Lehman College women's basketball team fell just short as they dropped a CUNYAC game to the College of Staten Island, 80-73, from Staten Island on Wednesday.  The Lightning players reached double-figures in scoring.

Staten Island was whistled for a technical foul before the tip and Ayanna Behagen converted one of two foul shots to put the Lightning up, 1-0.  Lehman and the Dolphins came out and battled early on, as the two favorites in the CUNYAC jockeyed for position.  Staten Island eventually held a slim, 8-5 lead midway through the first.  A Selena Lopez layup followed by a Lisa Fields three-pointer gave Lehman a 10-8 advantage.  CSI would come back to lead 19-18 after one quarter.

The Lighting were held without a field goal in the second quarter, totaling just three points in all on free throws from Lynda Fields, Aliyah Dorsett and Lillybeth Garcia.  Lehman trailed by 14, 35-21 at the half.

Lehman came out of the respite and turned up the defensive pressure, using the press to create turnovers and get themselves back into the game.  A Behgaen jumper with 0:24 in the third pulled the Lightning within 11, 59-48.  They trailed 61-48 after three quarters.

A Lisa Fields jumper at 8:23 in the fourth got the Lighting within ten, 63-53.  Halfway through the quarter, a Behagen three-point-play and basket from Dorsett pulled Lehman within four, at 68-64.  The Dolphins made a stand from there and went on to win, 80-73.

In the game, Behagen posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.  Garcia finished with 11 points and five assists.  Lysa Fields scored 15 points.

With the defeat, Lehman is now 6-6 overall and 2-2 in CUNYAC competition.  The team returns to action on Friday, January 5, when they face York College in Queens at 6PM.
