Box Score Staten Island, N.Y. – A frenetic, second half comeback for the Lehman College women's basketball team fell just short as they dropped a CUNYAC game to the College of Staten Island, 80-73, from Staten Island on Wednesday. The Lightning players reached double-figures in scoring.
Staten Island was whistled for a technical foul before the tip and
Ayanna Behagen converted one of two foul shots to put the Lightning up, 1-0. Lehman and the Dolphins came out and battled early on, as the two favorites in the CUNYAC jockeyed for position. Staten Island eventually held a slim, 8-5 lead midway through the first. A
Selena Lopez layup followed by a
Lisa Fields three-pointer gave Lehman a 10-8 advantage. CSI would come back to lead 19-18 after one quarter.
The Lighting were held without a field goal in the second quarter, totaling just three points in all on free throws from
Lynda Fields,
Aliyah Dorsett and
Lillybeth Garcia. Lehman trailed by 14, 35-21 at the half.
Lehman came out of the respite and turned up the defensive pressure, using the press to create turnovers and get themselves back into the game. A Behgaen jumper with 0:24 in the third pulled the Lightning within 11, 59-48. They trailed 61-48 after three quarters.
A
Lisa Fields jumper at 8:23 in the fourth got the Lighting within ten, 63-53. Halfway through the quarter, a Behagen three-point-play and basket from Dorsett pulled Lehman within four, at 68-64. The Dolphins made a stand from there and went on to win, 80-73.
In the game, Behagen posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Garcia finished with 11 points and five assists. Lysa Fields scored 15 points.
With the defeat, Lehman is now 6-6 overall and 2-2 in CUNYAC competition. The team returns to action on Friday, January 5, when they face York College in Queens at 6PM.
