The Lehman College men's basketball team will face the Bloodhounds of John Jay this evening at 6 PM at CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium for a spot in the CUNYAC finals.
The Lightning have played inspired basketball all season. Led by
Luis Hernandez's 19 points per game, three other players have also averaged double figures.
Andrew Utate is chipping in 16.3 points per contest.
Mylo Mitchell and
Jean Marcial are averaging 14.2 and 11.6 points per game.
As a team the Lightning have shot .490 from the field (787-1606) and have averaged an impressive 18 assists per game.
This past year the Lightning and Bloodhounds have met twice on the hardwood with Lehman taking both games. The schools met on December 5, 2017 in the Doghouse on the John Jay campus with the Lightning coming away with a 92-86 victory. Lehman trailed by 11, 49-38 at halftime and used a strong second half to overtake the Bloodhounds. Lehman outscored John Jay 10-4 in the final 2:36 to come away with the win. In the victory,
Mylo Mitchell netted a career high 33 points on 10-13 shooting from the field, 6-8 from behind the arc and 7-11 from the charity stripe.
Luis Hernandez added 19 points.
Andrew Utate tallied 15 and
John Brens chipped 10 points.
In the rematch in the Bronx on January 27, 2018, the Lightning earned a homecoming victory 86-68.
Luis Hernandez led the charge with 31, shooting 11-14 from the field and 4-6 from the behind the arc. Utate and Mitchell added 22 and 12 points respectively. Lehman opened the game on a 14-0 run and after the Bloodhounds cut the lead to two early in the second half the Lightning went on a a 10-0 to extend their lead to 12. John Jay was able to cut the lead to eight with just over five minutes to play but could not get any closer.
This marks the fifth straight season that the Lightning will have appeared in the CUNYAC Semis. Last season, Lehman fell to CCNY 73-71 on a three-pointer in the waning seconds.
