Men’s Volleyball Ends Four Match Skid with 3-0 Blanking of SUNY Purchase

Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team ended its four-match-losing streak with a convincing, 3-0 victory over SUNY Purchase on Tuesday in the Bronx.  The Lightning improved to 2-4 on the year.  The sets went 25-14, 25-15 and 25-18 in what was the home-opener for Lehman.

Lehman took a 3-0 lead in the opening set behind the strong serving of George Montilla.  Later in the set, already ahead 15-9, the Lightning got a point off of a Montilla kill and added another on an attack error off a Xayveon Williams serve.  The Panthers were forced to call timeout. After the respite, Lehman led 21-14 and finished off the set with four straight points from a service error, two attack errors and a Williams kill.

Set two was back-and-forth early with three ties.  With the score even at 6-6, the Lightning used a 6-1 run to go up, 12-7.  Roberto Ventura Diaz served for three of the points.  After Purchase got within four points, at 14-10, Lehman used a 6-2 run to go up 20-12.  They closed out the set on a Peter Veljovic service ace.

Montilla opened set three with a pair of aces.  Both sides jockeyed for position from there and the game would eventually be tied at 10-10.  After that, an 8-0 Lehman run put the set out of reach.  Mentor Mahmuti served for seven of the Lightning points in that run.  Lehman closed out the match with three straight points on a service error and two attack errors from Purchase.

Diaz led the team with ten kills.  Montilla and Filipe Velandia totaled 13 assists apiece and Jose Bautista picked up 14 digs.

The Lehman College men's volleyball team returns to action on Thursday, February 8, when they face New Jersey City University in Jersey City.  The first serve is slated for 7PM.
