New York - The Lehman College men's volleyball dropped a pair of CUNYAC matches to Baruch and John Jay in a tri-match played at John Jay on Saturday. The Lightning fell to Baruch, 3-1 and were bested by the Bloodhounds, 3-2.
Against Baruch, Roberto Ventura Diaz had a double-double of 18 points and 14 digs, while posted a season-best, 41 assists with 13 digs. Yaw Eshun contributed 14 digs, while Jose Bautista recorded a team-best 16 digs. The scores of the sets with the Bearcats went 25-19, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-22. Lehman fell behind 11-4 in set one, before four straight points pulled them within 11-8. Peter Veljovic keyed the run with strong serves. The Lightning got within a point, at 12-11 when Eshun and Bautista turned aside a Baruch attack, but the Bearcats took the set, 25-19.
Lehman fell behind 9-5 in set two, before they rallied once again. An 8-0 run turned the four point deficit into a four point cushion. Roberto Ventura Diaz served for all but one of the points. The score would eventually even out at 22-all and the Bearcats scored three of the last four points to take set two, 25-23.
Set three went to Lehman, 25-19. A pair of Eshun kills helped the Lightning take a 4-1 lead in the set. After Baruch tied the score at 4-all, but strong serving from Eshun led to a 4-0 run and an 8-4 Lehman lead. Baruch never tied the score in the rest of the set.
Baruch took the last set, 25-22. The score was tied 4-4 when the Bearcats took the lead and didn't relinquish it until Montilla serve led to an attack error that tied the sore at 21-21. Baruch took the set by three points.
In the second match of the day, the Bloodhounds defeated Lehman in five sets. The scores went 25-23, 19-25, 27-25, 19-25 and 18-16. Diaz had 22 kills, while Eshun totaled 17. Montilla finished with 48 digs and nine digs. Juan Carlos Santos had 22 digs.
A kill and strong serve from Eshun gave Lehman a 23-20 lead in set one. The Bloodhounds scored five straight points to take the set, 25-23. Set two went to Lehman, 25-19. The Lightning fell behind but evened the set at 13-13. From there, kills from Diaz and Eshun put Lehman up, 16-13. Strong serving form Veljovic helped the Lightning close the set with four straight points.
Set three went to John Jay, 27-25. A Diaz kill evened the score at 24-all, but the Bloodhounds tallied three of the next four points to take set three. Set four went to Lehman, 25-19. Eshun tallied the final two points of the set on a kill and an ace. The fifth sent went to John Jay.
With the losses, Lehman's record dropped to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in CUNYAC play. The team returns to action on Tuesday, March 13 when they host Brooklyn College at 6PM.
