Bronx, N.Y. - The Lehman College softball team swept a doubleheader against Yeshiva in a pair of games played at Fordham University on Thursday. The Lightning won game one, 14-1, in five innings and took game two, 11-2, in six.
Lehman took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first. Stephany Cruz singled and scored on an error. Samantha Torres also scored in the frame on a wild pitch. Torres collected three hits and scored three times in the game.
The Maccabees got one back in the first on an error and a double. The two-bagger was the only hit that Lehman pitcher, Yaidee Nieves would allow. She walked one and struck out 12 to earn her first victory of the season.
Lehman scored four more runs in the second to take a 6-1 lead. Tiffany Adames doubled to lead off the inning. Genesis Paulino then reached on an error that scored Adames. Paulino would score on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Torres singled and Caitlin Vernon followed with an RBI hit that scored a run. Another run came in on a wild pitch. Vernon stole second and scored on a couple of errors.
The Lightning pushed across seven more runs in the third to go up, 13-1. Andrelina Gil and Nieves rocked consecutive doubles to account for the first run. After a walk, Paulino drove in a pair with a base hit. Destiny Roldan, Torres and Selena Lopez all had RBI singles in the inning, and Vernon recorded her second hit of the game. Nieves collected her second hit of the inning as Lehman sent 13 batters to the plate to account for the seven runs. They scored another run in the fourth on a Hailey Davila RBI hit. The game ended in five innings via the eight-run-rule.
Game two saw Lehman jump out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the third and three more in the fourth. Adames drove in the run in the third with a single, and Vernon and Nieves each had RBIs in the fourth. Davila put the Lightning up 6-2 after her double plated two in the fifth. Lehman put the game away in the sixth with five runs on five hits. Samantha Torres struck out 13 in her six innings of work to earn the win.
The Lehman College softball team returns to action on Sunday, March 18 when they host Maine Presque Isle in a doubleheader that starts at 10AM.
