Bronx, NY - The Lehman College softball team dropped a doubleheader to Maine Presque Isle on Sunday by scores of 9-1 and 16-3. Each game lasted just five innings. The team is now 4-9 on the season.
Stephany Cruz, Andrelina Gil and Caitlin Vernon each had a hit in game one. Yaidee Nieves drove in Gil with an RBI groundout in the fourth. Vernon leads the team in batting (.389) and hits (14) and has a hit in six of her last seven games.
Game two saw the Lightning rally late. Vernon was the hitting star once again, collecting a pair of hits and scoring a run. Lehman took a 1-0 lead in the second when Nieves walked and got to third on a double by Tiffany Adames. Genesis Paulino reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Lisette Guerro drew a walk to score Nieves.
The Lightning scored twice more in the fifth. Samantha Torres ripped a single up the middle. Vernon put runners on the corners with another single. Torres was eliminated on a fielder's choice, but Nieves connected on an RBI single that plated Vernon. Lehman also got a run on an error.
The Lehman College softball team returns to action on Tuesday, March 20, when they host St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
