Softball Drops Doubleheader to Sarah Lawrence

Bronx, N.Y. - The Lehman College softball team dropped a home doubleheader to Sarah Lawrence by scores of 2-1 and 17-6 on Wednesday.  The team is now 4-13 on the year.

Game one was a pitcher's duel as Diamond Villegas was the tough-luck loser.  She threw all seven innings, allowed just one earned run on just three hits and struck out four.  She fell to 1-5 on the year.  Lehman took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of this game.  Maranda Diaz led off with a single to right. She stole second on scored on an RBI hit from Villegas.  The lead stood until the sixth when the Gryphons tied the score.  They got the game-winning run an inning later and hung on for the 2-1 victory.

Lehman got off to an inauspicious start in game two, falling behind 8-0 after half an inning.  Those runs we charged to the losing pitcher, Yaidee Nieves, now 1-5.  The Lightning answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to pull within 8-3.  Just like in game one, Diaz led off with a base hit, stole second and scored on a Villegas single.  Tiffany Adames later reached on a single too.  Villegas and Adames both scored when a ball of the bat of Nieves was dropped in right for an error..

Sarah Lawrence went up 11-3 with three runs in the third and made it 13-3 with two more in the fifth.  Once again, the Lightning rallied to avoid the eight-run-rule in the fifth.  After the first out, Adames and Genesis Paulino walked. Nieves followed and reached on a ball that was misplayed for an error.  Adames and Paulino came home and a throw to nab Nieves at third was overthrown, allowing her to score.  Lehman got back to 13-6 without producing a hit in the inning.  The Gryphons scored four times in the sixth and went on to win 17-6.  Villegas led the team with two hits, including a double.

The team looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday, March 31, when they face the College of Staten Island in a doubleheader on Staten Island.  The first game begins at noon.
