The Lehman College baseball team split games with Baruch College on Saturday falling 17-4 in the opener and winning 7-2 in the nightcap.
In the first game the Lightning jumped out on top 1-0 scoring in the home half of the first. Julius Puryear doubled to right center with two outs and was driven home when Mark Vargas singled to left field. Baruch tied the game in the third and went ahead in the fourth plating two more runs. Lehman was able to get one back in the bottom of the fourth as the Lightning put together three singles. Euriel Murray was credited with the RBI. The Bearcats bats awoke in the fifth as Baruch plated four runs in the frame, six runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh.
In game two, the Lightning struck for three runs in the bottom of the first. Rob Kiernan led off the game by drawing a walk and advanced to third on a Mike Zerbo double down the left field line. Puryear then singled down the right field line plating Kiernan. A single to center field by David Rodriguez scored Zerbo and Puryear staking Lehman to a 3-0 lead. Baruch got two runs back in the top of the third on a McGroarty homer to right. However the Lightning answered right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Puryear doubled down the left field line and scored on a Vargas single. Rodriguez then doubled to right center to score Vargas. Lehman would add runs in the fourth and sixth to earn the victory. Rich Frommelt went the distance for the Lightning scattering seven hits and striking out three. Frommelt is now 3-1 on the season.
Lehman returns to action on Tuesday as the travel to Montclair, NJ to take on the Red Hawks.
