Newark, NJ - The Lightning women's soccer team suffered their first setback of the season falling 3-2 in OT to New Jersey City University (4-3) in a non-conference affair. Lehman now stands at 2-1-1.
Lehman (2-1-1) struck first as Valeria Rojas netted her first goal of the season 17 minutes into the contest as she capitalized on an NJCU turnover. The Lightning took their 1-0 lead into the halftime break. NJCU's Laura Ford got the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half. Nine minutes later the Lightning took the lead again as
Melanie Siranaula buried a free kick from 35 yards out into the upper right corner beating Gothic Knights keeper Sheyla Salazar. It was Pyles first goal in a Lehman uniform. In the 79
th minute NJCU's Mallensy Vargas knotted the score at two as she was able to dribble through much of the Lightning defense before connecting on a shoot from 35 yards out. Eight minutes into the extra period the Gothic Knight got the game winner off the foot of Katherin Merino.
NJCU held a 31-13 advantage in shots. Lehman keeper
Rebecca Gritz was credited with 10 saves.
Lehman falls to 0-2 all-time against the Gothic Knights.
Lehman is now 0-1-1 against New Jersey Athletic Conference schools. The Lightning kicked off the season with a 0-0 tie against Rutgers-Newark.
The Lightning return to action on Wednesday when they open conference play against Medgar Evers. Kick-off is slated for 4 PM at Kingsborough CC.
