The Lightning (2-3) defeated Manchester 7-6 in 10 innings at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC earlier today. It was their third game in 24 hours.
Lehman produced the winning run in the top of the tenth as
Jeremmy Santos led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Henry Gonzalez then sacrificed Santos to third and
Geraldo Rodriguez singled to left with the game winner. Gonzalez, Santos and
Michael Zerbo each were credited with two runs scored. The Lightning pounded out 14 hits on the afternoon; Santos led the way with four hits,
Mark Vargas three and
Anthony Riley two.
Lehman got on the board in the first inning as Gonzalez led off reaching first on a strike out wild pitch. After a Rodriguez walked and wild pitch, Lehman had second and third with no outs.
Mark Vargas then delivered a single to center to give Lehman a 1-0 lead. The Spartans tied it up in their half of the frame. The Lightning jumped ahead again in the second plating two runs as Zerbo, Santos and Gonzalez produced back to back to back singles and an error. Manchester added a run in their half to make the score 3-2 after 2. The score stayed that way until the sixth inning. Lehman was able to manufacture a run after an
Anthony Riley single. He advanced to second on an error and was sacrificed to third by Francisco Polanco late scoring on a wild pitch. The Spartans once again cut into the lead adding a run in their half. In the eighth Lehman was able to score two runs on one hit and an error to extend their lead to 6-3 before the Spartans added another run in the bottom of the eighth. In the ninth, Manchester scored two runs on four hits to send the game to extra innings.
Rich Frommelt and
Jarret Oehler each threw five innings for Lehman with Oehler earning the victory striking out six. It was his second victory of the season.
Lehman returns to action tomorrow afternoon to face Penn State Berks in a twin bill.
