Bronx, NY - The Lehman College softball team defeated John Jay 6-2 in the opening game and 8-3 in the nightcap to improve to 13-16:8-2 while the Bloodhounds fall to 13-19:7-5 and secure the fourth seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Post Season Double Elimination Tournament this weekend. The Lightning will either be the two or three seed.
In the opener the Lightning jumped out on top in the top of first.
Diamond Villegas belted a one out triple down the right field line and was driven home by a
Maria Gilfilan single up the middle. In the third the Lightning added to their lead by plating two runs on three hits. The Bloodhounds got one back in their half of the inning aided by a Lehman error. In the fourth the Lightning doubled their production by scoring three more times.
Stephany Cruz drew a one out walk and scored on a Villegas double to left.
Caitlin Vernon then tripled to right center scoring VIllegas. A Gilfilan ground out scored Vernon. The Bloodhounds got one back in the bottom of the sixth but Villegas was able to hold them at bay. The senior pitcher only surrendered four hits and an earned run while striking out 13 for her eighth victory of the season.
In the nightcap, the Bloodhounds scored an unearned run in their first inning. Lehman squared the game in the third. Villegas once again helped her own cause as she belted a two out double down the right field line. Vernon then delivered a single to short stop scoring Villegas. The Lightning broke the game open in the fourth plating six runs. Lehman pounded out five hits in the frame. The Bloodhounds got two back in the fifth but Lehman added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the final margin of victory. Villegas had another strong performance in the circle striking out 10.
The Lightning return to action Wednesday night at the South Field. Lehman will recognize the two seniors on the squad in between games against CSI. The first game is scheduled to start at 5PM.
