Bronx, N.Y. – In a closely contested encounter, the Lehman College women's soccer team fell by a score of 2-1 to visiting New Jersey City University (NJCU) on Sunday afternoon at South Field. The Lightning drop to 0-7 record, while the Gothic Knights improve to 5-2 mark.
NJCU opened the scoring in the 20
th minute-mark when midfielder Mallensy Vargas hit her 11
th tally of the season off a corner kick shot that went past the Lehman goalkeeper
Rebecca Gritz for the 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Vargas notched her second tally of the game in the 62rd minute after beating two defenders and then Gritz on a one-on-one for the visitors' 2-0 advantage.
With less than 35 seconds remaining, Lightning defender
Micaela Canapa scored off a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, however Gothic Knights held on for the victory.
Lehman commence CUNYAC action next Saturday (September 21
st) when it visits York College-NY at noon.
