Bellerose, N.Y. – The Lehman College softball team swept a CUNYAC twin-bill from hosts York College-NY, 14-5 and 13-0, on Friday at the Padavan-Preller Field. The Lightning go to a 7-8-1 overall record and 2-0 in CUNYAC action, while the Cardinals fall to a 4-8 mark and 0-2 in conference play.
After a 1-1 deadlock in the conclusion of the first inning of the doubleheader opener, Lehman scored five times in the second and three more in the third to pull away for the victory. Short stop
Patria Sanchez scored three times and drove in four runs for the Lightning, while infielder
Lizbeth Perez also crossed home plate three times and had three RBI. Lehman pitcher
Jireh Espina allowed only two earned runs and struck out six batters.
In the nightcap, the Lightning jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings and then added six more runs in the fifth for the win, while Espina pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts. Sanchez once again led the Lehman offense as she went two-for-four with a homer, two runs scored and five RBI. Outfielder
Natalie Kola was two-for-three with two runs scored and two RBI, while Perez was three-for-three and scored three times.
The Lightning continue CUNYAC doubleheader action next Friday (April 12th) when they welcome Hunter College at South Field with first pitch set for 3:30 pm ET.
