The Lehman College women's basketball squad defeated John Jay 70-62 in the CUNYAC opener for both teams this afternoon in the Doghouse on the John Jay campus.
Lehman (6-3:1-0) scored the first ten points of the fourth quarter to take control of the contest en route to the victory. Heaven FIgueroa led the way for the Lightning with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and three steals. Freshman Isabela Araujo had her most productive day of her young career with 20 points and seven rebounds. Emily Kennedy led the Lightning with 10 rebounds.
The Lehman pressure defense was extremely effective forcing 34 turnovers.
Lehman jumped on the Bloodhounds (1-8:0-1) early scoring the first nine points of the contest. John Jay battled back and by the end of the first quarter the game was knotted at 16. Three minutes into the second period, the Bloodhounds had their biggest lead (23-19) of the afternoon. The first half came to a close with the Lightning on top 34-32. Lehman owned a slight lead throughout the third quarter and scored the first 10 points of the final period to take an 11 point advantage and a lead they would not surrender.
The Lightning return to action on Thursday night as they host defending CUNYAC Champion Brooklyn at 5 PM in the APEX.
