Bronx, N.Y. – For the first time in a decade, the Lehman College softball team opened its season with a 2-0 overall record, as it swept a non-conference twin-bill (18-2, 15-3) against visiting Yeshiva University (0-6 mark) at South Field on Tuesday evening.
In the opener, the Lightning jumped out to an 18-0 lead after just three innings of action, as all uniformed players scored at least once. The Maccabees attempted to extend the game as it got two runs in the top of the fifth, however the hosts held on for the victory, behind pitching from
Jireh Espina who allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters. On offense, Espina hit two triples with an RBI, while outfielder
Yudelis Pena was two-for-four with three RBI. Shortstop
Nicolle Swierczek also drove in three runs with her first collegiate triple, while outfielder
Lizbeth Perez, infielders
Jelene Figueroa and
Angelina Perez all had two RBI each.
In the nightcap, Lehman had a 7-0 advantage after two innings of action, before Yeshiva scored twice in the third. The Lightning then outscored the Maccabees eight to one take the second game of the doubleheader.
Lizbeth Perez led the Lehman offense with three runs scored, a homer and four RBI, while
Angelina Perez drove in two more runs and pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts for her first collegiate victory on the mound.
Lehman is back in action on Saturday (March 22nd) when it hosts Cedar Crest College, in a non-conference doubleheader, at South Field, with the first pitch set for 1 pm ET.
