Coach Gurney

Darren Gurney

Coach Gurney came to Lehman College in the Spring of 2020 with an extensive NCAA baseball coaching background.

Gurney serves as the third base coach and pitching coach for the Lightning. His responsibilities include development of the pitcher ramp up and throwing program, in-game pitch calling, offensive/defensive signal system, and recruiting coordinator. 

Previously, he coached at Division I Iona College and as field manager for the Metro NY Cadets in the ACBL. His Cadets team won back-to-back Kaiser Division titles and advanced to the ACBL Championship game. Coach Gurney was also named field manager for the ACBL All-Star Game in Lafayette, PA. He has coached over twenty players who were selected in the MLB Draft or that have gone on to play professional baseball.

He is the founder/director of the Rising Star Baseball Camp in New Rochelle, NY which teaches players ages 4-15.

Coach Gurney is an on-field coach for Team America which competes in Japan, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Italy, and other international locations.

Coaches Choice Publishers has requisitioned Coach Gurney to write four baseball books and film seven instructional DVDs since 2011. Coach Gurney played four years of varsity baseball at Washington University in St. Louis where he compiled a .389 batting average and .542 on base percentage in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Conference. He holds a Master’s degree in Social Studies Education from Teachers College at Columbia University in NYC.
