Jose Toval became the interim head coach of the women's and men's volleyball programs in September of 2015. He spent the previous two seasons as the assistant coach for both teams. This past fall he guided the Lightning women's team to a 13-15 and a third place finish in the CUNYAC with a conference mark of 6-2. In the spring he guided the men's team to an 8-18 overall record and a 6-11 the CUNYAC. The interim tag was removed before the start of the 2016 women's seaosn.
Originally from Queens, the Lehman College graduate was a two-sport star. As a member of the swimming and diving team, the distance specialist was a member of back-to-back-to-back CUNYAC Championship teams, in 2006, 2007, and 2008. With men's volleyball, he was a four-year player, who was a regular starter as the setter or libero.
He earned his undergraduate degree in mass communications and journalism, with a minor in multi-lingual media, in 2008.
