The Lehman College women's tennis team (1-5 Overall, 1-1 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference match, falling to Sarah Lawrence College by a score of 8-1 Friday afternoon in a match played in Bronxville, NY.
The Gryphons took a commanding lead after doubles play, capturing all three doubles sets. At No. 1 doubles, it was Sarah Lawrence's Sarah Morris and Caroline Bentley turning back Lehman's combination of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters in a very competitive match by a score of 8-6. The Gryphons' Tatiana Trofimchuk and Marie Barnevik-McKeige were beating Lehman's duo of Dong-In Shin and Gabriela Harewood 6-0 before Shin got hurt and Lehman was forced to retire the match, giving Sarah Lawrence the 6-0 win. The Gryphons also won the third doubles match by default, giving them a clean sweep of doubles.
When play switched to singles, Sarah Lawrence kept the pressure on Lehman, eventually capturing five of the six singles tilts. The Lightning's lone victory came when Neville outlasted Morris by a score of 10-7. At No. 2 flight singles, Peters fought valiantly but came up short, falling to Bentley 10-8. Following the loss, Head Coach Zack Davis spoke on his team's effort.
“We fought hard out there today, and we were a couple of plays away from making this a very interesting match, but the truth is that Sarah Lawrence played better then us today. We'll regroup and get ready for Kean University on Monday afternoon.”
The Lightning next will travel to Kean University to battle the Cougars on Monday, with match-time scheduled for 4:00pm.
