The Lehman College women's tennis team (2-6 Overall, 2-1 CUNYAC) won for the second time this season as they defeated the New York City College of Technology Yellow Jackets (0-4 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) by a score of 6-3 Thursday afternoon at the APEX Tennis Courts in the Bronx.
The Lightning got off to a fast start, capturing two out of the three doubles match. At No. 1 doubles, Lehman's standout combination of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters blanked the Yellow Jackets' pair of Alma Cabral Reynoso and Davida Harris by a score of 8-0. The Lightning also claimed victory at No. 2 doubles in dramatic fashion as Natalee Smith and Juyoung Kwon got by NYC Tech's Kimberly Battle and Noory Croos by a score of 9-8. The Yellow Jackets salvaged the third doubles contest as the team's combination of Aniella McGuire and Djenane Angrand defeated Lehman's duo of Dalia Rodriguez and Amaia Liriano.
With the Lightning staking claim to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, things got very interesting when the match moved to singles. Lehman would prevail, however, taking four out of the six singles sets. Neville, Peters, and Harewood would all earn victories at No's 1,2, and 3 singles, respectively, and at No. 6 singles, Liriano downed Angrand by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Following the victory, Head Coach Zack Davis said that he believed his team was heading in the right direction.
“It feels very good to get a victory like this, as we worked very hard to get it,” Davis said. “Now we have a winning record in the conference, and we have some positive momentum going into the match against a very talented Staten Island team. I'm interested to see how we'll respond on Tuesday.”
The Lightning will return to action this Tuesday afternoon as they stay home to battle the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in another CUNYAC match, with match time at the APEX Tennis Courts scheduled for 3:30pm.
