NO. 4 RANKED AMHERST COLLEGE HOLDS OFF LIGHTNING IN NON-CONFERENCE TILT AT APEX

Box Score

The Lehman College women's basketball team (8-8 overall, 3-2 CUNYAC) fell to the No. 4 ranked Amherst College Lord Jeffs (17-0 overall, 2-0 NESCAC) in a non-conference game by the score of 68-58 Tuesday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx. The Lightning kept things interesting but were unable to pull ahead in the second half against a stingy Amherst College team.

Despite the loss for the Lightning, senior standout Sally Nnamani netted a game-high 20 points (8-16 FG) for Lehman while snatching six rebounds. Junior point guard Tonisha Kirby put together a phenomenal evening with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists, and senior Monique Sampson chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds. Lehman connected on 38.7 percent of their shots and won the turnover battle, 21-20. Despite the loss, Head Coach Eric Harrison was very pleased with the team's effort.

“We came out tonight with good intensity and great energy, and that is very encouraging to see coming off of a loss this past Friday,” Harrison said. “We went down by 11 points early, but we rallied back and showed great perseverance at times, and that is very encouraging to see. Obviously, we still have some things to work on, but our focus is on best positioning ourselves in the upcoming CUNYAC tournament, and tomorrow we face a Medgar Evers team in a hostile environment, so hopefully we'll being the same energy there that we brought tonight.”

In the victory for the Lord Jeffs, sophomore Jaci Daigneault scored a team-high 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Fellow sophomore Sarah Leyman also chipped in with 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists while guard Courtney Long added 12 points. The Lord Jeffs connected with 41.7 percent of their shots and dished a whopping 20 assists compared to only eight for the Lightning. Amherst College won the rebounding battle 46-35 while also tallying 11 steals on the evening.

The Lightning return to action tomorrow evening as the team travels to Brooklyn to take on the Cougars of Medgar Evers College, with game-time scheduled for 5:30pm. Lehman College now has nine games remaining in its season, with eight of the contests being league games. The Lightning currently own the fourth best conference record in the league, and will hope to improve their positioning with a win tomorrow night.
