The Lehman College women's basketball team (7-5 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) started off 2009 on the right foot as the Lightning picked up an impressive 73-59 victory over CUNYAC rival City College of New York (6-4 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) Sunday afternoon at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, NY.
The Lightning began a string of four consecutive CUNYAC contests with a victory mostly because of yet another stellar performance by stalwart senior Sally Nnamani, as the standout scored a game-high 28 points (11-27 FG) while snatching a game-high 13 rebounds while also swatting five shots, dishing four assists, and tallying two steals. The Warwick High School product has now posted a double-double in seven of the Lightning's last eight games. In addition, feisty guard Kelsey Ash nailed three shots from beyond the arc and dropped in 13 points, and versatile senior Monique Sampson netted seven points, grabbed eight caroms, and recorded three steals. Following the game, Head Coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts on the victory.
“It was very satisfying to resume the conference portion of our schedule on a positive note,” Harrison said. “Obviously the non-conference games help us build character and toughen us up, but one of our primary goals is to capture the No. 1 seed in the 2009 CUNYAC Tournament, and every time we pick up a win in a league game, we take another step towards accomplishing that goal. Now we'll have a few days off and we'll get back to work on Wednesday against a good Staten Island team.”
In a losing effort for the Beavers, CCNY was led by Anika Rivera who scored a team-high 14 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and dishing six assists. Standout Ashley Straughn posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Simone Tharkur netted 10 points and snatched five rebounds.
The game also featured a plethora of turnovers, with the Lightning committing 23 turnovers while forcing 32 Beaver miscues. Lehman College out-rebounded the City College of New York by a margin of 52-45, and the Lightning held a slight edge in shooting percentage, connecting on 36.4 percent of their shots while the Beavers hit on 34.9 percent of their attempts.
Lehman will have two days off before returning to action as the Lightning will travel to Staten Island to battle the CSI Dolphins in a very important CUNYAC contest, with game-time scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
