WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO BROOKLYN, DEFEATS MOUNT ST. VINCENT ON COLUMBUS DAY

The Lehman College women's tennis team (8-6 Overall, 3-4 CUNYAC) completed their suspended match with the Brooklyn College Bridges on Monday morning at the APEX Tennis Courts, and the Lightning dropped that conference match by a score of 5-4. Following that, Lehman battled the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent and picked up a victory by a score of 7-2.

 

In the Lightning's defeat to the Bridges, Lehman captured two of the three doubles sets to grab an early 2-1 lead in the match. At No. 1 doubles, it was the team of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters defeating Brooklyn's pair of Ruth Perez and Olexandra Osviy by a score of 8-2. Lehman's Gabrela Harewood and Melissa Hemick fell to the Bridges' Nadine Alexander and Erika Gil by a score of 9-8 at No. 2 doubles, and No. 3 doubles saw the Lightning's Natalee Smith and Heoe Eun Kwon turn back Brooklyn's Amalea Sideris and Diana Derks, 8-4.

 

Following doubles play, Brooklyn College captured four of the six singles sets to account for their 5-4 victory. The Bridges' singles wins came at No. 2 set singles (Osviy defeated Peters, 6-0, 6-2), No. 3 set singles (Alexander turned back Harewood, 6-3, 7-5), No. 4 set singles (Gil downed Hemick, 6-0, 6-2), and No. 5 set singles (Sideris silenced Smith, 6-4, 7-6). The Lightning's two singles wins came at No. 1 (Neville defeated Perez, 6-3, 6-1), and No. 6 (Kwon over Berks, 6-4, 6-2).

 

Lehman dominated doubles play in its victory over the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent, capturing all three doubles sets. At No. 1 doubles, Neville and Peters defeated the Dolphins' Kim Carreon and Karen Laurent 8-3. No. 2 doubles saw Harewood and Hemick down Mount Saint Vincent's Ronilen Joy Nieva and Noelle Marie LeGaspi, 8-4, and Ravnit Bhatia and Natalee Smith of Lehman defeated Monica Luis and Candy Santana of the Dolphins 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

 

When play switched over to singles in that contest, the Lightning were victorious in four of the six singles sets to capture the contest, 7-2. At No. 1 singles, Neville blanked Carreon 10-0. Lehman's three other singles wins came at No. 3 (Harewood defeated Jessica Martinez, 10-6), No. 4 (Smith over Nieva, 10-7), and No. 6 (Alexandria Reel over Santana, 10-4). The Dolphins' wins came at No. 2 (Laurent over Peters, 10-9) and No. 5 (LeGaspi over Yasmin Samuels, 10-7).

 

The Lightning will return to action tomorrow afternoon as Lehman will battle the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in a CUNYAC contest at the APEX Tennis Courts, with match-time scheduled for 3:30pm.
