WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HONORS THREE SENIORS BEFORE DOWNING CARDINALS IN WILD GAME

Box Score

The Lehman College women's basketball team (16-8 Overall, 10-2 CUNYAC) won their eighth consecutive game, turning back the York College Cardinals (7-15 Overall, 5-7 CUNYAC) by a score of 81-73 in front of a tremendous crowd Wednesday evening on Senior Night at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the victory, the Lightning solidified the No. 3 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC women's basketball tournament, a feat they accomplished when the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island turned back Brooklyn College earlier in the evening.

Prior to the start of the game, Director of Athletics, Dr. Martin L. Zwiren, Vice President of Student Affairs Jose Magdaleno, and Head Coach Eric Harrison and his coaching staff took a few moments to honor three special seniors who have given so much to the Lehman College women's basketball program during their tenures with the team. Seniors Sally Nnamani and Monique Sampson received plaques as well as commemorative framed jerseys for playing for the Lightning for four seasons, and two-year senior Whittney Barnes received a plaque. Each senior was also presented with a bouquet of flowers.

In a game that featured 11 lead changes, 52 points scored off of turnovers, 16 missed free throws and 30 steals, the Lightning outlasted the Cardinals in one of the most exciting games of the season. Leading the way for the Lightning was junior sharpshooter Kelsey Ash who finished the evening with 23 points while connecting on five treys, dishing seven assists and tallying five steals. Sampson posted a double-double with a hearty effort, scoring 12 points and snatching a game-high 20 rebounds, and Nnamani inched closer to the 2,000-point plateau, as she notched 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The Warwick High School product now has 1,990 points for her Lehman Career. Following the game, Coach Harrison was very pleased with the ceremonies and the victory.

“Tonight was a great evening as we had a chance to honor three spectacular seniors who were supported by these athletic department, the coaches, their teammates, the fans, their friends, and so many members of their family,” Harrison said. “The team worked hard and played very well against a physical, hungry York team. It was great to get a victory to keep our streak alive."

Despite the loss for the York College Cardinals, Kadisha Wickham scored a game-high 24 points (20 in the second half) to go along with 12 rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. In addition, Justina Boatwright added 13 points and four assists.

The Lehman College women's basketball team wraps up its regular season this Friday evening as the Lightning travel to New York, NY to battle the Bearcats of Baruch College in a CUNYAC showdown, with game-time scheduled for 5:30pm.
