WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM PICKS UP STRONG VICTORY OVER HAWKS ON ALUMNI DAY

Box Score

The Lehman College women's basketball team (15-8 overall, 9-2 CUNYAC) won their seventh consecutive game, turning back Hunter college (6-15 overall, 3-8 CUNYAC) by a score of 78-60 on Alumni Day at the APEX Center in the Bronx. The Lightning used a nice balanced effort in their victory as the team continues to play terrific basketball down the stretch of this season.

Leading the way for Lehman was junior guard Kelsey Ash who put forth a terrific performance of the afternoon as she netted a game-high of 28 points (9-15 FG, eight three pointers) to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior sensation Monique Sampson chipped in with 16 points (8-11 FG) while snatching nine rebounds and tallying five steals, and senior Sally Nnamani had a double-double as she netted 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Warwick High School product now has 1,973 points, 27 short of 2,000 for her career. Following the game, Head Coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts on the victory and Alumni Day as a whole.

“As far as the victory was concerned, I felt we did a fine job of coming out and being aggressive, especially on the defensive side,” Harrison said. “We made life very difficult for the Hawks, and we forced them into mistakes. Kelsey played a great game, and Monique was all over the place as she normally is. As far as the alumni game, it was great to see so many former Lighting players, both from the men's program and the women's program, come back to Lehman College to show what they could do on the court. Seeing them play and have fun was great to see.”

Although the Hawks out-rebounded Lehman 60-41, the Lightning held Hunter to 32.8 percent shooting for the game, while the Lightning connected on 38.4 percent of their shots. Lehman won the turnover battle by 13 and dished out 15 assists compared to five for the Hawks. Lehman also recorded 21 steals to Hunter's nine.

Despit the loss for the Hawks, sophmore guard Megan McKenna had a double-double with a team-high 25 points (7-9 FT) and 13 rebounds to go along with four steals. Junior guard Shay Branch El-Vielot netted 11 points while grabbing eight rebounds and Juanita Whyms chipped in with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Following the game, the annual Lehman College alumni basketball game took place. The team wearing blue colored jerseys consisted of Chris Bowman (03'), Greg Terry (06'), Jonathan Rojas (04'), Marc Domin (04'), Tiara Carroll (08'), Kimberly Kelly (08'), Ron Brown (75'), Vantroi Chapman (02'), Joe Cruz Jr. (01'), Gamba Thompson (08'), and Ivelisse Rosario (02'). The team wearing white colored jerseys consisted of Ted Herwitz, Dennis Kumnipa (01'), Kenny Calderon (08'), Shirley Arrieta (08'), Mike Patrick (03'), Pablo Pimentel (00'), Chris Diplan (07'), Austin Conyers (02'), Miguel Jorge (05'), and Terrence Shaw (02'). In a highly contested battle, the white team prevailed over the blue team by a score of 30-27.

The Lightning return to action on Wednesday evening as the team will battle the York College Cardinals on Senior Night, with game-time scheduled for 6:00pm. Prior to the start of the game, the Lehman College athletic department as well as Eric Harrison and his assistants will take a few moments to honor three seniors (Sally Nnamani, Monique Sampson, and Whittney Barnes) for their dedication to the program during their time at Lehman.
