Game 2 Box Score

The Lehman College softball team (4-18 Overall, 2-6 CUNYAC) picked up a pair of crucial conference victories Friday afternoon, defeating the York College Cardinals (0-15 Overall, 0-7 CUNYAC) by scores of 14-8 and 21-6 in a pair of high-scoring affairs in Queens, NY.

Offensively for the Lightning in game one, Lehman recorded 14 hits and took advantage of eight York College errors. Five Lightning players had at least two hits in the first game. Lehman was led by the performance of freshman catcher Vania Cadet who finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI's. Monique Sampson went 2-for-5 at the dish with a homerun, two runs scored and two RBI's, and Natalie Martinez and Genesis Batista each recorded a pair of hits as well.

The Lightning and Cardinals each scored a pair of runs in both the first and third innings. After three innings of play, the game was tied at four apiece. Lehman then took the lead for good in the top of the fourth, plating two more runs to take a 6-4 lead, an advantage the Lightning would not relinquish. Lehman eventually dented home plate four times in each of the fifth and sixth innings to put the game away. Victoria McMahon did a great job in relief of Natalie Martinez, as McMahon hurled 3 2/3 innings and allowed just three runs (two earned) on no hits while walking five and striking out two.

In game two, the Lightning scored 21 runs on just seven hits. The Cardinals, however, issued 21 walks which proved to be the difference in the game. Lehman plated nine runs in the top of the first inning and nine more in the top of the third to take a commanding 18-5 lead after three innings of play. York College would chip away, however, outscoring Lehman College 11-3 over the ensuing three innings to pull to within five runs, at 21-16. Both teams failed to score in the seventh inning, though, as the Lightning went on for the victory.

In the second contest, Cadet finished 3-for-4 with a triple, five runs scored, two walks, and two RBI's. Martinez knocked in three runs, scored two runs and walked three times, and McMahon picked up a pair of hits, including a double while driving in two runs. Natalie Martinez picked up the victory for Lehman College in game two, but Victoria McMahon pitched well in relief, hurling 2 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out four.

The Lightning will return to action Sunday afternoon as the team battles the College of Staten Island at the South Field in the Bronx in a CUNYAC doubleheader, with the first game getting underway at noon.
