SOFTBALL SPLITS PAIR OF NON-CONFERENCE GAMES WITH COLLEGE OF NEW ROCHELLE

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

The Lehman College softball team (5-27 Overall, 2-10 CUNYAC) split a pair of non-conference games, falling to the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels in a 12-11 slugfest in game one before capturing a 9-4 victory in game two. The games took place at the South Field in the Bronx, but the Lightning served as the visitors for both contests.

The first game of the afternoon featured Lehman's Natalie Martinez taking on the Blue Angels' Meghan Showell. Things looked positive for Lehman early on, as the Lightning plated three runs in the top of the first inning. The Frame was highlighted by a two-RBI single by Genesis Batista. After the Blue Angels failed to score in the bottom of the first inning, Lehman added three more runs in the second inning thanks to a two-RBI single by Monique Sampson who eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. After an inning and a half of play, Lehman led 6-0.

After the Blue Angels scored one run in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third, Lehman put up another three spot when they came to bat in the fourth. Whittney Barnes hit a two-RBI triple and then eventually scored on a wild pitch to account for Lehman's three runs in the frame. The College of New Rochelle, however, would score nine unanswered runs (plating two in the fourth and seven in the fifth) to take a 12-9 lead after five innings. In that seven-run bottom of the fifth inning, the Blue Angels recorded four hits and took advantage of eight Lehman errors in taking the lead. The Blue Angels' Kristina Forrest, Lindsay L Abbate recorded RBI singles in the inning, Amaris Pena recorded a two-RBI single, and Kelly Quartironi added an RBI double.

Lehman got two runs back in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a Blue Angels error and an RBI single by Sampson. After five and a half innings of play, the Lightning trailed 12-11. Neither team would threaten after the top of the sixth, and the 12-11 score held up as the Blue Angels completed their rally from six runs down to take the contest.

Offensively for the Blue Angels in the victory, Pena finished 3-for-4 with three singles, two runs scored and four RBI's. Showell and Forrest also recorded two hits apiece. Showell also picked up the win for her team, while Martinez took the loss for Lehman. At the dish for the Lightning, Sampson, Martinez, and Christy Pasqualicchio all recorded two hits apiece, and Barnes finished 1-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and two RBI's. Pasqualicchio left the game in the top of the fifth inning with an injury.

Game two was a completely different story for Lehman College. Victoria McMahon got the start for the Lightning and was brilliant in getting the victory, hurling a seven-inning complete game and allowing just four runs (none earned) on four hits while walking two batters and striking out eight. Meghan Showell took the loss for the College of New Rochelle.

The Lightning plated five runs in the top of the first inning. The frame was highlighted by a two-RBI single to center by Barnes and an RBI single to right field by Arleni Ulloa. The five-run lead for Lehman College proved to be enough, as Lehman added three more runs in the second inning and another in the seventh to account for their nine runs on the day.

Offensively for Lehman in game two, Batista finished 3-for-4 with three singles, two runs scored and a stolen base, and Vania Cadet added two hits while scoring two runs.

The Lightning will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as the team takes on the Baruch College Bearcats in a single-elimination CUNYAC quarterfinal game at the South Field, with start time scheduled for 4:00pm. Lehman, despite playing the game on its home field, will be the visiting team.
