The Lehman College softball team (2-10 Overall, 0-3 CUNYAC) dropped a CUNYAC game, falling to the Brooklyn College Bridges (3-11 Overall, 2-4 CUNYAC) by a score of 10-5 Tuesday afternoon at the South Field in the Bronx. The second game between the teams, which got underway shortly after 6:00pm, was halted after three innings of play with the Bridges leading the game by a score of 9-4. That game will be resumed at a later date and time.
In the one game of the day that did get in, the Bridges were paced by shortstop Jenna Ferrera who finished the day 2-for-4 at the dish with a double, a run scored, a walk, and two RBI's. In addition, outfielder Danielle Kramer doubled, scored a run and drove in two runs while finishing the day 1-for-4, and infielder Ashley Allen went 1-for-2 on the day with two runs scored, an RBI, and three walks. Brooklyn starter Nicole Bianco went the distance and picked up the victory for the Bridges, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking six and striking out a pair.
Taking the loss for the Lightning was Natalie Martinez, as the right-hander went the distance, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on seven hits while walking 11 and striking out three. Offensively for Lehman College, catcher Vania Cadet finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, and infielder Genesis Batista finished 1-for-3 with a run scored, a stolen base, and two RBI's.
Brooklyn scored two runs in the top of the first inning, and the Lightning tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. The turning point of the game came in the top of third inning when the Bridges would plate five runs to take a 7-2 lead, an advantage Brooklyn wouldn't relinquish. That five-run third inning included four hits by the Bridges and a pair of Lightning miscues. Lehman eventually trailed 10-3 after five and a half innings, but the team would rally to pull to within 10-5 and the potential game-tying run was in the on-deck circle in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Monique Sampson would fly out to centerfield to end the game.
The Lightning will return to action tomorrow afternoon as Lehman welcomes the Baruch College Bearcats to the South Field for a CUNYAC doubleheader, with game-time scheduled for 3:30pm.
