The Lehman College women's tennis team (2-1 Overall, 0-1 CUNYAC) won their second consecutive match, defeating non-conference opponent Manhattanville College (0-2 Overall, 0-0 Freedom) by a score of 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at the APEX Tennis Courts on the campus of Lehman.
Doubles play was extremely intense, with the Lightning outlasting the Valiants to capture No. 1 and No. 2 flight doubles competitions. At No. 1, Lehman's standout combination of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters defeated Manhattanville's dup of Danielle Waldron and Scarlette Rodriguez by a score of 9-7. No. 2 doubles saw the Lightning's Gabrela Harewood and Melissa Hemick turn back the Valiants' pair of Boramy Siek and Julia Romano by a score of 8-6. Finally at No. 3, Manhattanville was able to salvage a doubles battle as Annie Jaeger and Kaitlin Triano downed Lehman's Natalee Smith and Yasmin Samuels, 8-1.
When play switched over to singles, each squad took three flights apiece to account for the 5-4 final score in favor of the Lightning. Lehman picked up victories at No's 1,2, and 5 flight singles. No. 1 flight singles saw Neville defeat Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-3. Peters silenced Siek 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and at No. 5, the Lightning's Heoe Eun Kwon beat Romano 6-2, 6-0. Manhattanville's victories included Triano retiring Harewood at No. 3 singles, Waldron downing Hemick 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 flight singles, and Joeliza Valdez beating Smith, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 flight singles.
Following the match, Lehman College head coach Zack Davis spoke very highly of his team's performance.
“To come out 24 hours after defeating a tough William Paterson squad pick up another victory over another tough non-conference opponent is extremely encouraging,” Davis said. “I definitely feel as though our confidence level is at a high right now, and we just want to keep it going. We're off to a good start, and that's always very important in terms of building confidence and setting the tone for the season.”
The Lightning will return to action Friday afternoon as Lehman battles Polytechnic University in a non-conference match at the APEX Tennis Courts, with match-time scheduled for 3:30pm.
