The Lehman College women's tennis team (3-4 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference match Saturday afternoon, falling to the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons by a score of 6-3 at the APEX Tennis Courts.
The Gryphons set the tone for the match by capturing two of the three doubles sets. After Sarah Lawrence defaulted No. 1 set doubles, the Gryphons won at No. 2 doubles when Lauren Hudson and Antonia Verdei defeated Lehman's combination of Heoe Eun Kwon and Melissa Hemick, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, it was Sarah Lawrence's Danielle Saporta and Ye Weon Kim downing the Lightning's duo of Yasmin Samuels and Natalee Smith, 8-2.
When play switched over to singles, the Gryphons captured four of the six sets to account for the 6-3 final score. Sarah Lawrence's victories came at No. 2 singles (Laura Fenney defeated Aurora Peters, 10-5), No. 3 singles (Hudson downed Hemick, 10-7), No. 5 singles (Kim turned back Smith, 10-7), and No. 6 singles (Saporta defeated Samuels, 10-0). Lehman's two victories at singles came at No. 1 (Evauna Neville outlasted Sarah Morris, 10-8) and No. 4 singles (Kwon downed Rachel Franks, 10-1)
Following the match, Lehman College head coach Zack Davis gave his thoughts.
“We played hard today, but Sarah Lawrence College has a very talented team and they played extremely well today,” Davis said. “Our team has a tremendous amount of pride so I am confident that we won't let this loss dwell on our minds.”
The Lightning will return to action on Monday morning as Lehman will take to the road to battle New York City College of Technology, with match-time scheduled for 11:00am.
