The Lehman College women's tennis team (0-1 Overall, 0-1 CUNYAC) fell in their season opener and first conference match of the season to the Hunter Hawks (1-0 Overall, 1-0 CUNYAC) by a score of 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at the APEX Tennis Courts in the Bronx.
The Hawks took an early 2-1 lead after doubles play, with all three contests coming down to the wire. At No. 1 flight doubles, Hunter's Stefanie Smith and Evgeniya Kim defeated Lehman's Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters 9-8. The Hawks' Veronica Efimenko and Olga Chagin defeated the Lightning's Heoe Kwon and Melissa Hemick 9-8 at No. 2 flight doubles. Lehman got on the board at No. 3 doubles as Gabrela Harewood and Natalee Smith turned back Hunter's combination of Ericka Jaramillo and Nora Millman by the score of 8-6.
The Hawks would capture three of the four singles matches that were played. At No. 1 singles, Hunter's Evgeniya defeated Neville 6-0, 6-0, and at No.2 Efimenko defeated Peters 6-4, 6-2. Lehman's singles triumph came at No. 3 when Harewood would down Smith 7-5, 6-2. At No.4. Nora Millman defeated Kwon 6-4, 6-0 for the victory. The No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches were not played.
Following the loss, Lehman College Head Coach Zack Davis expressed his thoughts about how his team competed.
"Hunter College has always been historically strong, and their team played a little better than us today,” Davis said. "I'm proud that our team was able to take them to the brink in a number of our matches. It is very encouraging to see and I feel that we definitely have the talent to make some noise this season.”
Lehman will return to action on Friday afternoon to face the St. Joseph's of Long Island Golden Eagles at the APEX Tennis Courts at 4:00pm.
