WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM DONE-IN BY SHANAHAN'S FREE THROWS IN FINAL SECONDS

Box Score

The Lehman College women's basketball team (4-9 Overall, 2-1 CUNYAC) dropped a CUNYAC contest, falling to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (4-7 Overall, 2-1 CUNYAC) by a score of 48-47 Wednesday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx. Staten Island's Allie Shanahan connected on a pair of free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining in the game, and that proved to be the difference in the contest.

The Lightning trailed Staten Island by a score of 46-44 with less than 20 seconds remaining when Tiana Rosa connected on a layup and drew the foul, and the Lehman College crowd erupted. Rosa would then make good on the go-ahead free throw, giving the Lightnign a 47-46 lead. Dolphins head coach Marguerite Moran elected not to call a timeout as CSI pushed the ball down the floor and Shanahan would be fouled with 1.5 seconds left on the clock. It was only Lehman's ninth team foul, so Shanahan headed to the line for a one-and-one opportunity. She would hit on the first attempt to tie the game at 47 before giving her team the lead, 48-47, on her next attempt. Lehman College would not get a shot off as time expired and the Dolphins would pick up the victory.

In the win for Staten Island, it was Danielle McLaughlin leading all scorers with a game-high 16 points to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. Also, it was Katelyn Hepworth adding five points, a team-high 12 rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and Kristen Panariello would chip in with eight points. For the game, CSI won the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues while forcing 26 Lehman errors.

Despite the loss for Lehman College, it was business as usual for Tiana Rosa who has established herself as one of the hardest-working players in the CUNY conference, as she finished the evening with a team-high 15 points to go along with a game-high 17 rebounds. She also blocked a pair of shots and tallied two steals as well. Paula Robinson added nine points and six rebounds as well, and Melissa St. Louis snatched 15 rebounds. The Lightning out-rebounded Staten Island by a whopping margin of 59-37 on the evening, including a 25-12 margin on the offensive glass.

The Lightning will return to action on Friday evening as Lehman College welcomes Hunter College to the APEX Center, with game-time scheduled for 5:00pm.
