Lightning Subdue Bears in Win

Make it two for two for the Lightning versus St. Joseph's Brooklyn.

Playing the Bears for the second time in less than a week, Lehman dispatched of the home team in straight sets – 25-11, 25-21, 25-17 – in a match that was not as close as the score might indicate.

Coach Wolfgang Lucena had his ladies ready to play from the start as they jumped out to an early 10-4 first set lead. St. Joe's would pull within 10-8 but a combination of kills from Lakeisha Gordon and quality serving from Gerri-Ann Martin helped Lehman put away the Bears without much trouble.

The second set featured more stellar play from the Lightning, in particular Ashley Meany and Racine Brown. Meany tallied four kills, including the set clincher, and Brown was solid from the service line, forcing several errors by the Bears in addition to an ace of her own.

Not wanting to play any more sets than necessary, Lehman burst out of the gate in the third set, taking a commanding 17-6 lead behind the serving of Yamilka Vicente and Vanessa Brown. Brown, in particular, commanded play from the service line as Lehman grabbed eight consecutive points with her initiating the action.

Statistically Meany was the star of the match, registering a season high 10 kills, while Martin notched five kills, 12 digs and five service aces.  Lisa Jagdeo set up the Lightning to the tune of 26 assists and also served three aces in the win.

The Lightning play their final regular season home game and CUNYAC match on Tuesday against John Jay. Prior to the match, Lehman will honor their two departing seniors, Meany and Gordon. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
