Sun Sets on Beavers in Lightning Victory

On Friday afternoon in the Bronx, the sun set on the ladies of the City College of New York both literally and figuratively.

Already leading 5-1, Lehman was awarded the overall victory over the Beavers when the final three singles matches of the day were called on account of darkness.

Suspended because of the diminished sunlight were Ravnit Bhatia and Darya Vasedin; Krystina Nguyen and Janine Beckles; and Ashley Cox and Johanna Uquillas.

Prior to competition being halted, Lehman's results in doubles action reflected the day's weather as the Lightning were nearly perfect in capturing two of the three matches. Winners for the Lightning included the No. 1 team of Bhatia and Smith, who defeated Vasedin and Beckles 9-7, and No. 3s Dalia Rodriguez and Cox, who trumped Natalie Saint Eloi and Elena Louie 8-3. Nearly pulling out No. 2 doubles were Nguyen and Alexandria Reel, who fell to Naydine Johney and Johanna Uquillas 9-7 in a close match.

Singles action was the domain of the Lehman ladies in the three matches completed. In No. 2 singles, Smith turned away LaPortia Hackworth 6-0, 7-5; Daraliz Collado ambushed Saint Eloi 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 singles; and Rodriguez triumphed over Johney 6-4, 6-2 in No. 5 play.

A quick turnaround is in order for Lehman as they're back on their home court at 12 p.m. tomorrow afternoon for another CUNYAC matchup, this time against Baruch College.
