The Lehman College softball team picked up its first two victories of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Screaming Eagles of the College of Saint Elizabeth's in a pair of non-conference games by scores of 9-8 and 15-7 at the South Field in the Bronx.
In the first game of the afternoon, Lightning hurler Racine Brown pitched and picked up the victory for her squad, pitching a complete game and allowing seven earned runs while striking out 10 batters. The Screaming Eagles' Catherine Eber took the loss, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits and seven walks while striking out three batters.
The Lightning held an 8-3 lead after three innings of play, but St. Elizabeth's chipped away, plating a run in the fifth inning, two runs in the sixth, and two more in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Lehman College would win the game thanks to a Jennifer Mena sacrifice fly which scored Claribel Herrera.
Offensively for Lehman College in game one, the Lightning were led by Kelsey Ash who recorded two singles and finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and a stolen base. Bethany Rodriguez went 1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, and two walks.
In the second game of the day, Lehman's Natalie Martinez got the victory, pitching a six-inning complete game and allowing six earned runs while striking out five batters. St. Elizabeth's Alexandria Gooding took the loss, allowing 15 earned runs, 13 walks, and 12 hits in five innings. The Lightning put the finishing touches on the win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking an eight-run lead and enforcing the mercy rule.
Martinez also had a phenomenal game at the dish as well, finishing 2-for-3 with two singles, three runs scored, three runs batted in, and two walks. Ash singled three times, scored twice, and knocked in three runs while recording a walk. Vania Cadet finished 3-for-4 with three singles, four runs scored, two runs batted in, two stolen bases, and a walk.
For the Screaming Eagles in game two, Ebony Hunter went 2-for-3 with two singles, a run scored, and two runs batted in.
The Lightning will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as Lehman will battle the Baruch College Bearcats in a CUNYAC doubleheader at the South Field in the Bronx, with game one scheduled for 4:00pm. The Lightning will serve as the road team for the contests.
