The Lehman College softball team (5-16 Overall, 1-7 CUNYAC) picked up a pair of non-conference victories on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle by scores of 8-0 and 19-2. The highlight of the day was the stellar pitching in game one by Lightning hurler Natalie Martinez, as she tossed a complete game, five-inning no hitter while walking just two batters and striking out 10.
Martinez' dominating performance was extremely impressive, as the right-hander did not allow the Blue Angels to hit a ball into the outfield while pitching her no-hitter.
Offensively for the Lightning in the game, Claribel Herrera hit her first homerun of the year and she finished 2-for-3 for the game with two runs scored and a run batted in as well. Leadoff hitter Bethany Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and Vania Cadet singled, scored two runs, and stole a base.
Martinez took the ball for the Lightning in game two as well, and she picked up the victory in that contest, hurling four innings and allowing just two runs (both earned) on no hits while walking seven batters and striking out nine. For the day, Martinez tossed a total of nine innings and didn't allow a hit. Kelsey Ash would pitch the final inning of game two for Lehman College, and she wouldn't allow a run despite scattering two hits.
At the dish for the Lightning in the second game, it was Ash connecting on a pair of homeruns and finishing the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and seven runs driven in. Martinez doubled, tripled, scored two runs and drove in five, and veteran Genesis Batista tripled, singled, finished 2-for-2, scored a run, and drove home two.
The Lightning and the Cardinals will battle in a CUNYAC doubleheader at the South Field in the Bronx on Thursday evening, with the first game scheduled to begin at 5:00pm.
