The Lehman College softball team (5-22 Overall, 1-11 CUNYAC) dropped a pair of conference games on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (18-12 Overall, 10-2 CUNYAC) by scores of 6-0 and 11-0 at the CSI Softball Complex in Staten Island, NY.
Lightning hurler Natalie Martinez had a no-hitter going into the bottom of the sixth inning. The game was scoreless heading into the frame, but the Dolphins tallied all six of their runs in the inning. Jenna Schulman got the scoring started when she would steal home, and that was followed by Joanna Tepedino's RBI single that brought home Kaitlyn Flynn. Tepedino would then come home on an RBI single by Danielle Ponsiglione. Michelle Ferraiuolo's sacrifice fly would later score Catherine Ebro who reached base via a walk. Jill Castore would reach base and steal second while Ponsiglione stole home, giving the Dolphins a 5-0 lead. Amanda Winant rounded out the CSI scoring as he had an RBI single, as Castore came home, making it 6-0 Staten Island.
In the game one loss for the Lightning, Kelsey Ash, Genesis Batista, and Vania Cadet had the three Lehman College hits, as each girl picked up a single.
Game two saw CSI score nine runs off five hits and one Lehman error in the first inning against Natalie Martinez. Staten Island had RBI's from Ferraiuolo, Jillian Graniero, and Kaitlyn Flynn. CSI would plate their other two runs in the fourth inning thanks to Danielle Brandow's two-run triple.
Ponsiglione picked up the victory for Staten Island in game two, fanning 11 Lehman hitters. Natalie Martinez, who took the loss in game one, also took the loss in game two, allowing 11 runs (five earned) on six hits and eight walks.
Genesis Batista picked up the lone hit for the Lightning in game two – a single.
The Lehman College softball team will return to action Tuesday evening as the Lightning will battle Mount St. Mary's in a pair of non-conference games at the South Field in the Bronx, with start-time for game one scheduled for 6:00pm. Prior to the game, senior Taniefa Taylor will be honored.
